Historical background
Irikkoor is a small panchayat located about 29 km northeast of the Kannur district center, roughly in the central part of the district, near the Western Ghats mountain ranges. To the south, it borders the Irikkoor River, to the north Sreekandapuram village panchayat, to the east Padiyur village panchayat, and to the west Malappattam panchayat.
Irikkoor has centuries of stories to tell. Evidence that it had a place in historical records even before around 1323 is found in the inscriptions near Nilamurttu. It was one of the most ancient and important industrial centers in the Malabar highland region. Water transport contributed to both trade growth and prosperity. Since the main source of the Valapattanam River flowed this way, it’s a historical fact that the hard work and trade spirit of the people in this area helped develop the world-class coir industry in Valapattanam.
The ancient Mahadevi Temple and Nilamuttam Makham are proud symbols of Indian culture and Hindu-Muslim friendship. With the settlement of the Christian community, church bells, bank calls, and sacred chants began to fill the area. It’s a remarkable achievement of Irikkur to preserve the village's humble beauty while also gaining the grandeur of a town. During the dark days of colonial rule, Irikkur was considered an important center for the British. The current Sub Registrar Office was established by the British in 1896. Brave patriots who took part in the Pazhassi uprising against the British were at the forefront. The locals have always been ready to shed blood and sweat for the cause. In 1962, with the establishment of a high school, educational standards have also been maintained.Electricity was installed for the first time in 1955. In the same year, Irikkur Panchayat was established under the Malabar District Board, which was part of the Madras State. As part of Kerala State, Irikkur Panchayat was formed in 1962, and in the same year, the Block Office also came into existence. Looking back, there’s plenty to be proud of, but completeness is still far away. Let’s all move forward together in that endeavor without faltering...
