Geography

Irikkur Grama Panchayat is a major village panchayat located in Thaliparamba Taluk of Kannur district. Irikkur has a geographical uniqueness that connects the hilly regions with the coastal areas. Since it is situated on the banks of the Valapattanam River, this area has significant importance in terms of water resources, agriculture, and transport.

Geographically, Irikkur is a mixed terrain that includes plains, small hills, paddy fields, and riverbanks. The Valapattanam River, which flows through the middle of the panchayat, is considered the lifeline of the area. Historically, there used to be active water transport and trade through this river. Records indicate that items like timber, pepper, nutmeg, and cardamom were carried through the river from the hilly regions.

The climate here is tropical monsoon in nature. The rainfall received from both the southwest and northeast monsoons is favorable for agriculture. Rice cultivation, re-cultivation, coconut, pepper, and other crops are widely grown here.

Geographically, Irikkur was once the border area between the Chirakkal taluk and Kottayam taluk. It is believed that the name 'Irikkur' came from the people who lived along the banks of the Valapattanam river.

Since major roads and state highways pass through the panchayat, Irikkur still holds importance in trade and transportation. Irikkur grama panchayat is a natural-social landscape that combines rivers, fields, hills, culture, and religious harmony.
